Rawlings is Frustrated, says Ben Ephson

Posted by Business in Ghana on April 16, 2009

Political analyst and Editor-in-Chief of the ‘Daily Dispatch’ newspaper, Ben Ephson has described the continuous attack on the character of President John Evans Atta Mills by his former boss, Jerry John Rawlings as an act of frustration.

He believes Jerry Rawlings, who is the founder of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), the party on whose back Mills rode to office is finding it extremely difficult to come to terms with the fact that the incumbent President is exhibiting some level of independence.

In an exclusive interview with the paper to share his thoughts on the raging issues of internal democracy that has hit both the ruling NDC and New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Ephson, a renowned pollster, underscored that though the perception might not necessarily be true, it cannot be ignored in politics, stressing that “it is now becoming clear that Rawlings is getting frustrated by Mills’ fair amount of independence.”

It is incredible how people cannot seem to think beyond their immediate interests. Sober political analysts did not and still do not consider Mills as an appropriate Prez candidate not only because he appeared to be and is still very clearly a man who cannot be considered as psychologically and physically fit to run a country – particularly Ghana, at this time in its history. Worse of all is the ‘shadow of Rawlings’ dilemma not only for Mills but for the country. His utter contempt for all and any other leader of this country clearly makes it seem that he thinks he is the only one who can, or perhaps, should run this country. Meanwhile having been the leader of this country for well over 15 years, the longest by any other leader, he has got relatively very little to show for his stewardship. His bastardization of the Mills govt. will not cease until there is a final showdown. This is because there is clearly nobody in the NDC apparatus who has got the guts or the brains to bring Rawlings to order by making him understand that every leader has his or her own style or way of doing things. Unfortunately we the hapless and poor people of this country who are looking forward to some proper improvement in our lives by whoever is ruling, stand to suffer the consequences of this needless and stupid fratricidal skirmish. We await the resolution of this unfolding saga
